What hairstyle looks good on medium hair and stays good when growing it to long hair?

The last time when i got my hair cut, they made it into short layers.. I now want to have my hair long so Im growing out if it right now... The problem is, my layers are now at that staged that is making my hair look bad. So is there a hairstyle for medium hair that would stay at least okay until I could cut the way i want my hair to be when it is long?
